THE ASSEMBLY OF THE UNION ELECTS THREE JUDGES OF THE AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES' RIGHTS

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, July 19, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Assembly of the Union has appointed during its 19th ordinary Session, three judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. Among the 11 judges of the Court, three seats were vacant due to the expiry of their mandate.


The appointed judges of the Court for a mandate of 6 years are:


- Mr. El Hadji Guissé, Senegal, Western region

- Mr. Ben Kioko, Kenya, Eastern region

- Mr. Gérard Niyungeko, Burundi, Central region


The judges were elected by 51 Member States of the AU. Madagascar, Mali and Guinea Bissau could not take part in the process as they are under sanction.


Prior to their appointment by the Assembly, the Judges of the Court were first elected by the Executive Council during its 21st ordinary session.
